How to Use Atmospheric Hazards
The Atmospheric Hazards Project has two customized search capabilities
that can identify places that meet the user's set of criteria:
- multiple locations and
- single locations.
1) Multiple Locations
This method of searching will retrieve
all places meeting a set of criteria and plot their locations on a
map of Ontario. All data in the database can be examined to
determine if a place should be displayed. This type of search is
started by using the
"Look for many places"
link found on the introduction page.
The search presents groups of related parameters and assists the user
in examining the database to see what effect each individual
parameter has on the results of the search. Once values for
parameters have been determined, the parameter setting can be
added to the "Active Profile", which is a collection of these
settings maintained for each individual user on the system. This
Active Profile will be retained for two days for the user, and
then will be deleted.
If users wish to retain copies of their Active Profiles, they may do
so by assigning a user name and password to their sessions, and
providing a name for the profile to be saved, together with an
optional description. These profiles will be retained by the
system indefinitely, and may be retrieved into the Active Profile
on demand.

dumps of this type of search.
2) Single Locations
This method of searching will retrieve a
single place by name (or one nearby the desired location) and will
present all data in the database related to the specified. This
type of search is started by using the
"Look for a place by name"
link found on the introduction page.
This search consists of a simple form to the user, on which is entered
the name (or a fragment of the name) of a place the user desires
to examine. Upon submitting the form, the user will be presented
with a page listing all the places containing the name or fragment
entered, and for each, two buttons labelled "This is Close!" and
"This is the Place!" respectively. If the user selects "This is
the Place!" for a location, details of the place and data values
from the database will be shown. If the user selects "This is
Close!", a new page allowing the selection of places surrounding
the target is presented and by selecting various distances, the
user can retrieve the names of nearby places, again with the "This
is Close!" and "This is the Place!" buttons.
